Happy Mothers Day

Thank you to all the wonderful families I get to work with year after year. I love catching up and watching your children grow. Some of you were those children once!

Leaves EVERYWHERE :)

I wrote not long ago about this wonderful time of year - the leaves were changing and Adelaide during Autumn is superb for creating memorable art images. Well now they're well and truly on the ground! Piles of pure fun for kids, gorgeous expressions and colour for photographers and the perfect images to hang and grin at for years....
I REALLY would love to hold as many sessions as I can fit in while we have this natural wonderland for children's portraits on our doorstep. There's probably another few weeks until they start being blown & swept away for another year. If youd love to capture this time in your families lives, strolling through parks, playing through leaves, laughing and up to mischief amongst them, call me now and reserve your time.

Birthdays, birthdays everywhere...

It seems this time of year must be birthday season - I have so many in my diary to make sure I don't miss and know many clients celebrate around this time also. And celebrate you should! To avoid thinking too much of my OWN (also about now!) I'm introducing special Birthday Gift Certificates with over double their value in credit to use towards a priceless gift - a full portrait session and images.
Know someone with a special day? A 50th, 21st, 18th, new teenager (create something special now while they still let you ;) ). All birthdays are eligible. Skip through some leaves these school holdays!

Enjoy one of the best times of the year for beautiful rustic colour and hand tinted art pieces. The leaves are just starting to change, with those huge big piles of them just waiting to be stomped, kicked and thrown in the air! Mixing children, parks and leaves makes for great images and lots of fun. Make sure to call and book your school holiday session and capture a little bit of wonderful in your children's eyes and smiles - a treat to keep and treasure for years to come.

New styles, new sessions... we've been busy :)

Its "out with the old, in with the new", with a range of goodies that have been "in the works" for some time. Over Summer we've been fine tuning some brand new looks and have put together some great promotions and programs. Plus Autumn is here, and with it the most beautiful time of year for natural and art style images outdoors, specially family portraits and children's portraits.
Putting the new offers and styles together with the perfect picture making time of year is going to be fun! Watch out for the first release during the week. Keep checking in, March is going to be a busy month!

Christmas sessions

With Christmas just at the end of next week there are many "last minute" orders and art pieces being created for personal displays and gifts. With all work being individually art-worked and overseen it is always a "crazy busy" time. Don't forget the wonderful gift of a summer session as an idea for a special friend you know who would love some fine photography for their family. (hint: watch out for the special release being announced THIS WEEKEND ;-) )

I've been asked by quite a few if we're open over Christmas. Like many, I'm looking forward to enjoying more time with family and will be scaling back a little for a couple of weeks. However I AM still able to fit in a few sessions for those who have families here just over the holidays, including Thursday and Friday between Christmas and New Years Day. If you'd love something special to be created with the opportunity of having all your family here please enquire asap. There are just two sessions times left before New Years day (29th/30th) and a few the following week.

For all with children on or about to have holidays, enjoy the smiles, laughs and sometimes "mayhem" that goes with it!

Spring in!

What a fantastic start to Spring - sunshine, fresh air and wonderful locations everywhere.
After a great shoot this morning along the beach I just had to add a word or two here to remind everyone THIS is one of the best times of the year for what we do.
The "tiny's" (6/7 months - 12months) can sit up or hold themselves up with wonder and concentration amongst the new flowers appearing, toddlers just revel in everything new just about everywhere (gorgeous along the edges of full creeks and long grasses), the active two's and ever inquisitive threes and fours are in their element in the parks exploring and on the open beaches with less people around than in summer, and the older ones find plenty to smile about after designing sessions specially with them to show off what THEY love to do.
Whether its a beautiful textured LightSketch® art piece, a fine-art black and white portrait or classic image collection - make a time to call in and talk about ideas to suit your family.
I'd love to capture that extra little sparkle that I'm sure you see in your children's eyes and smiles now the colder winter months are passing.

"How do you get such great shots?" Its a very generic question i know but often asked and hard to answer. I'll translate that question into "how can you make what it felt like on the day come through in the photograph". Not just a big general grin or silly laughs but a whole story telling image representing something more, just from a "click".

I've also been "told" by wise and wonderful (often young) guests how great photoshop (gasp/cough...) makes it. Other than feeling the need to flatten the offender (behind a kind smile) for giving full credit to the mighty Adobe, I thought I'd put a few words together here about it.

As photographers we are so privileged to be invited into families lives and share some of their experiences. We're there to tell stories, capture moments and record what we see. But its more than that - its to capture the feeling wrapped up in those moments most of all.

How do you capture, and present, a feeling? Probably the hardest thing to teach.
It's empathy with others and being involved in the moment, not being just a casual observer. Its also craft and technical knowledge, composing the scene to tell the right story, "seeing" light and where to be before ever raising the camera. Knowing way in advance of pressing the shutter how you'd like the final print to be seen. Being patient, enjoying people, being aware of the environment you're in at the time, then back to lighting - its always about where the light is (or isn't!).

Somehow capturing small glances, wild mayhem or quiet moments is then more than just a "snap". It does just "feel" right, but behind those split second clicks are years of constant learning, an almost unconscious knowledge of how the tools we use behave to capture that light, and continual enjoyment of inventing something new. Because after the click that moment is gone forever and something new is there again.

So know the craft of professional photography inside out, keep finding new ways to bend pixels, enjoy the next best thing or keep the old faithful ways, learn archival printing & collect all those "useful" gadgets, then argue the merits of each others lenses, cameras, backup everythings and plugins.

Then when you're actually there and feel the moment, "simply" click.

Gold Awards at Pro Photography print judging

Very pleased to have been awarded two Golds at Australian Accredited Professional Photographers (AAPP) judging yesterday. In fact two out of two prints entered both awarded Gold. More rewarding still was that one was a new & unique hand printed art style I've been working on. Guess it's ready now to create for everyone... ;)

Such a busy time with so many wonderful Adelaide and interstate families to work with!
As the year starts to wrap up, so do the presents with quite a few art pieces under trees this year! "Rainer" won top billing and a place on our "Pic of the Month" page after a voting spree on our Facebook page last week.
There are so many wonderful stars helping us create images in front of the camera it's always hard to separate any individuals for our Pic of the Month page. This time we short-listed some favourites and put it to a vote! After a very active few days on Facebook we came down to a wonderful portrait of Rainer - a star who had so much fun while photographing in the park, with creek and ducks beckoning... Unique LightSketch® image wins Silver Award

Adelaide portrait photographer David Haddy won an AAPP Silver Award (Australian Accredited Professional Photographers) on Tuesday 1st June with a beautiful handprinted art style image. The sketch like style on European fine-art paper is unique to the studio and was described by one of the judges as "...having a lovely light, soft feel with beautiful texture..." and "...the (unique) process used gives it a sketch-like quality..."
